There's a forum/website called GPS Underground, haven't been there in a while but you can obtain maps and instructions for free from there last time I checked...

not going to post links, but you "purchase" tomtom maps from any good online dodgy store (hint: same place you'd get albums/films/tv shows etc), It's a simple case of uploading them to the SDCard and then use the tomtom activator (get it from the same place again).

Most of those are seriously outdated and a bit hit&miss... The site mentioned above by myself and Sam, contain compatibility tables, guides, and so-forth on how to go about it.
