would that be piston rings/ stem valve seals gone then? i've had 2 astra's with 1.4 and 1.6 8valve engines, they both ended up being oil burners and smoking like hell

Usual rust spots i know about are underneath the front lip of the bonnet, around the rear wiper arm, bottoms of the doors

Rust on the sills and chassis legs, sick your hand in behind the rear bumper too to check the back panel.

Check for missfiring, running roughly at all.

check colour of the water in the header tank

then just general things,

Check the tyres, (not a big issue but tyres aren't cheap)

as said rust on bonnet boot and under doors is normal

slight tapping is normal, and a smokey start up is normal. this is due to valve stem seals

if it smokes when you boot it, it will be piston rings. so avoid buying it.

cam belts every 40k, clutches usually go around 60k.

dodgy bonnet catches is quite normal too ive found. head gaskets are quite common to go too so check for dirty water in the header and a mayo substance under the oil cap

good luck!
