Our web design company/moron designed us a new website which essentially hasn't been working; we got 404 messages on all of the pages navigated to via the home page, unless you followed the drop down tree - it appears to be fixed now but this was her excuse:

The website was using friendly website addresses (different from when it was launched?) – e.g. but these are no longer working
So I’ve set the links up to be non-friendly ones which are working – e.g.
I know this is the wrong section but just wanted to know if this sounded legitimate

now it appears the contact us page isn't working correctly - there is a contact form, fill in your details and we contact you back - but these messages don't come through to us; where are they likely to go? To the web developer

Sounds like something you might do - called a server redirect - its supposed to be used to grab friendly addresses (ie. simple to type) and turn them into something the server can understand.
Having 404 errors all over the place clearly means they've fucked it up

No 404s now.
But the page nav is pretty basic.
It just directly links to each page eg. abc.com/contact.php rather than just calling the content.
Bit oldskool and simple but does the job and i got no 404s.
Contact page looks ok but cant access the .php it calls when you hit submit so cant see whats wrong there

If people are willing to pay them then its their fault. Not the 'designer'
If someone asked for a site with a content manager i wouldnt try build one from scratch i'd use Joomla etc same with Ecommerce. Why build from scratch when theres Zen etc about
