As above really its an ideal elan 2. It wouldnt fire up but it was sparking so i took it to bits and lit it with a small piece of wood. It fired up, great i thought as it worked for a few hours but then it went out so repeated and the same happened again. Its an old boiler about 15 years i think and ive never had it serviced, should i just buy a new 1? any ideas about the fault? cheers.

15 years is a long time for a boiler to last. I know a man that fits boilers

Our boiler is 25 years old 
Oh and i hope your a gas fitter? Gassafe registered etc?

we have the same boiler and it's about 15 years old aswell. think it was put in when the house was built.
i'm getting a combi boiler and i suggest you do aswell.
15 years is a pretty good lifespan for the boiler.

buy a new one. you will save/notice the difference in your bills.
id do it asap aswell! coz im cold here with heatin on!

could be something simple mate like the thermocouple or the boiler overheating causing it? any noises before its cutting out?
but to be honest the elan is pretty ancient so id prob change it

fault has been confirmed as a f**ked board, waiting on a price. I have decided if its less than 300 i will have it fixed if not can get a new baxi fitted for 1200. Ben G yeah my house is identical to yours, if i was going the combi route i would want to shift it from the kitchen to where the cyclinder is in that lift up panel in the bathroom so maybe 2.5k

As for the bills im paying £14 a month for gas as its just been reviewed although its been up and down loads over the years, carnt really see a combi saving me much more?

Should pay about £110 for the board mate, plus whatever labour!
You sure it's the pcb? If it's cutting out and knocking the pilot off I'd say it wasn't that!

Ideals were shit when they were brand new 
I replaced a few boards on Ideals, have a look on eBay and see if there are any reconditioned ones, I pay about £90 for them, I always give the customer the option of a brand new one or a recon one, all of them have opted for the recon, not had any problems with them yet
Just get a new boiler Imo, and depending what Baxi your after it will be cheaper to buy either the Potterton or Main model
they are the same boilers but with a different name on them

You will notice it with your bills but then you have just forked out a forture.
It all depends how long your going to be in the house. My boiler is far from great, probably 65/70% efficient BUT it was going to be a good 5+ years before i got anywhere near the break even point. If we look to move in the next few years it would be money lost.

Boiler now fixed turned out not to be the board but it needed a new injector and electrode cost £100 all in so well happy with that and just in time for the cold weather. Thanks for the input.

Pretty certain if you replace a boiler you now HAVE to put a grade A or B efficiency one in.

Maybe but out of all the people I know that have moved house in the last 5 years the state of the boiler has not decided if they move in (in fact virtually all have gone for houses with older boilers as they were nicer houses)
