Get yourself a set of Direct Drive Decks, a decent mixer and a good pair of headphones, then practice practice practice.

Give it a few weeks to get good - a natural ear for music helps reduce learn time.

I hate to think how much money I've spent on 12" over the years.

When I first started I bought a starter kit. Got it mail order and got it delivered for free from London. It was a Citronic Direct Drive deal with 2 decks and a Citronic Mixer. Free headphones but I paid for better Sony ones.

6 months later and after using some Technics at our Halls party @uni, I sold them for a set of Technics (£365 each) and a Vestax PMC175 Mixer (£225). I also bought Sony V700 DJ Headphones (£100).

The Cironic setup was £440 brand new and was an ideal way to start, but like everything mate, you get what you pay for.

I've used Citronic, Numark and Techics and say that they get better in that order. Vextax decks are also popular.

Technics set up cost me a grand in total. Best buy I've ever done!

And as a comparison in about a year I easily spent over a grand on tunage - that back catalogue!
