Thought 15's with Low profiles were best for track.

I've been using 16s on track for 2 years ad they've never been a problem. I've never actually tried 15s but most say they're better which is part of the reason my new track car is having 15s, the other part is because the tyres are cheaper
I imagine realistically it's not gonna make a massive amount of difference which you opt for, my old car has been known to be fairly handy round a track tho, despite having 16s

Still won't be as good as a decent set of lightweight 15's.

15's are better.
Cheaper and better range or tyres plus lighter wheel.

Tyres are cheaper and the wheel overall is lighter if you go for 15s.
16s would still do the job but you'll see the benefit of going smaller.

Only reason I can think of is so you can run bigger brakes! But good brakes with braided hoses are normally enough!
