This is a friend of mines car. She says her clutch "is fucked". It smells odd, and cant engage any gears. Although it will drive if 1st (or any gear) is selected before starting the engine.
Any ideas? New clutch or something more serious?

defo sounds like a release bearing. even if you can find one on its own you may as well change the whole clutch while the box is off

On my mums 206 1.4 we had similar issues although it would go into 1st etc but not reverse. it would just crunch
New clutch cable and a new clutch kit. release bearings was in pieces and damaged preassure plate. Clutch itself had some life left in it still...
Not that hard to remove the gbox tbh... drives side drive shaft is a pain though. i undid it together with engine mount and got it out that way!

Simple fix make sure the cable was properley adjusted too and it wasnt too tight might be a reason the clutch has burnt out down to a wrongly adjusted cable.

Yep make sure the cluch cable is ajusted properly if it has one, plus if its a tu engine then its so easy to change the cluch its silly, should only cost you a couple hundred if taking it to a garage as I've changed one within a hour before. Admittedly I had another tec helping me lol

Gearbox off indeed
you'll probably find it was adjusted correctly but being a woman driver she probably rode the clutch making the bearing sieze
