Right I might need to take the train tonight.
If I get on the train without a ticket I can wait for the conductor to come around and buy a ticket from him then and there. But will that be the same price that I can see on trainline.co.uk? Or will it be some daft overly inflated price?
Obviously there is a chance that no conductor will come round so it could be a free journey

You get an option to buy tickets and collect from the machine/window with Scotrail, could be the same?

It depends if the station you caught the train from had a ticket office open. If they did and you didn't buy a ticket, they get the hump and charge a fortune and potential fine you as well I think. If the ticket office is closed, they should do the same prices as from the ticket office I think....

Ticket machine as well, plus it also depends on the conductor - some a complete cunts, some are sound.

I got the train for free over xmas twice there and back because the stations were so packed.I thought "i'll buy it on the train instead of queing" and he never came up the isle

Doug, don't get it from trainline - IIRC they add about 50p to each ticket as their commission.
Instead, just buy it from nationalrail.co.uk - they forward you on to the website of the train provider themselves, with no commission added on.

Just buy it at the station ffs doug these days the fine is double the 1st class fair for that journey or £100 whichever is the greatest not worth the risk IMHO

back in the day when i used to get the train there was a little permit to travel or something machine.
put anything in (10p etc) and get a little ticket. then if he does come round he takes the 10p off the ticket price and your on your way to work with no fines.
could be talking shit and these things no exist anymore though

I don't understand why guards get the hump, certainly at the company I work for guards get paid commission on ticket sales as an incentive for them to get out selling/checking them.
