For underwater and just general toughness you want the Panasonic FT2.
For all-aroundness you want Panasonic TZ10.
If video recording is important however, look for a Sony.

tz8 tbh the only additional thing the 10 offers is GPs which he more then likely wont be interested in, and the TZ8 is cheaper.

thing is with the waterproof ones you lose a lot of important quality adjustments, optical zoom etc

that one you posted is only 4.6x optical for example, where the tz8 is 15x, im betting it has a better lens and image sensor aswell.

IMO if waterproof isnt vital, i wouldnt bother as it will be a lot more restrictive for your other images

Quite right, the TZ8 is a fantastic camera as well. As a travel camera however, I would prefer the TZ10 with the GPS as the price difference really isn't that big and it's an awesome feature.

However, I will be going for the TZ2 my self, when we go for our next holiday, as I would love to have the camera with me in the water when I go diving or surfing.
Really is a shame the TZ3 isn't as good looking.

it isn't vital to you or me, but he said he wanted an underwater cam if possible.

TZ8 is pimping.

To be honest, for most users the zoom on the FT2 is more than adequate.
If you stop measuring in X-times zoom and start measuring in mm's, you'll see the FT2 covers 28-140 mm (35mm equivalent) which is actually a very good range of optical zoom.

Also, the image sensor is the same, so you get all those awesome Panasonic iA functions on both cameras.

That being said, the image quality is obviously a bit better on the TZ cameras as it has a bigger and better lens. Also, the FT cameras are more expensive.

Yes, and as the quality of everything above 150 mm is doubtful to say the least, you're likely to use it very rarely.

Don't get me wrong, the large tele zoom is a great addition to a travel camera, it's also just highly overrated. The 3 mm step down from 28 to 25 mm is a far better sales point.

Personally I have used nothing but a 50 mm (on a 1,6x crop) for the last two years, so I've zoomed with my legs, with is surprisingly efficient.

looked at the g10, however purple fringing seemed to be an issue and the equivalent panasonic leica lens produced better images

Is that even on the market still? We are now at G12.

The Canon G-series only makes sense if you know about photography and want full manual controls as well as RAW file output.

The camera itself does not produce better pictures than cheaper alternatives.

I have one of these spot on and can be had for around the 100quid mark, waterproof works really well!
