apologies of this sounds like a noob question, if you want to say higher or lower adjustable coilovers, how do you get it accurate all way round? having never done this before is it just a case od measuring the distance between the gap with a tape measure?

I counted the threads. But then my AP's had really big threads whereas my BC's have considerably smaller threads and can be quite hard to see. Tape measure is probably more accurate.

softening the dampening at the height its on will just be a killer on speedbumps, just about manages to go over whilst set stiff

just a tad will work wonders, if you adjust the ride height you will need tracking re-doing too
