was thinking of getting a frame fabricated then attaching one of them halfords bottle jacks to use as a bearing/bush press. Can anyone see any short comings of this idea?

As long as the frame is strong enough, then I can't see why this wouldn't work.

Not a bad idea to be honest.

I did the same before I got a proper one,
The only hassle I had was the bottle jack I got didn't work upside down, so it worked like an upside down press and was tricky to setup,

Do you need a 10 tonne hydraulic press? You can get a 1 tonne arbor press for about £50 which will probably be less than getting one made for you.

As long as it was fabricated strong enough (if its just for car bearings and similar then it wont need to be massively big) Also have to be straight too so that everythings square when pressing things in.
Maybe even have some sort of guard that can be hung over the front for your own safety?

See if you can get a second hand one on Ebay. I've seen a lot of old heavy stuff go for fuck all - things like presses, vices and such.

Maybe worth asking local workshops or machine shops incase you can buy from them second hand when they get a new one.
Or look out at auctions or marts if there is any near you for sales of tools, machinery etc
