Oh and mike, talking of protective suits. I thought Alpha and Beta particles were stopped by as little as a thin sheet of aluminium, so the big issue is actual ingestion/inhalation of the particles rather than actual exposure.

Alpha particles are stopped by materials as thin as paper.
Beta will require something like Perspex or Aluminium
Gamma Rays will penetrate both of these and also several Cm of Concrete.

Alpha is harmless if it come into contact with your skin, but breathe it in and your fucked.

Beta Will penetrate the skin and mutate your DNA Cells etc

Gamma will do the same as will X-Rays but Rays will penetrate the whole body. so you wont get away from that.

And basically where If there is Alpha or Beta present then there will be Gamma present.

We use impervious suits at work, but more importantly we have Respiratory protection depending on the conditions it varies from a simple filtered respirator to a complete sealed air suit which is fed from a compressor from outside.

Yeah but iirc the occupational exposure limits are incredibly conservative at the best of times.

Yeah absolutely.

For those that are unaware of Radiation limitations....

1 Sievert will give you radiation sickness, some hair loss etc but you will recover

2 Sieverts will seriously harm you nearly killing you.

Anything about 2 Sieverts will kill you whether its in a days time or a month.

There are 1000 milliSieverts in 1 Sievert (mSv)

There are 1000 microSieverts (uSv) in 1 milliSievert.

HSE (Health and safety executives) will allow a male classified worked aged 18+ 20 mSv per year.

The power station i work try to limit you to 6 mSv if this is breached there is an investigation. If needs be they will allow 12 mSv but no one has ever come close to that.

The occupation that induces the most radiation is a Pilot The average piolrt recieves 4.5 mSv per year.

A few months ago i got 250 uSv and wasnt allowed into the reactor building untill the next month so the HSE regulations are well within safe limits.
