reheatis where fuel is just dumped into the exhaust gases, this caused excedssive explosion of fuel, propelling the aircraft forward, very uneconomical but immense thrust available

burners are just a slang for the above

That may be true Ed, its only BAs last 757 taken out of operation.

Reason they dont fly them is financial for BA, there was nothing wrong with the planes when they were all grounded. Branson made efforts to buy the fleet and professed he could make them successful but they stated the planes arent for sale - its a great shame.

They're pretty much junk though, you can't make them financially viable when oil is $100 a barrel and they take off in a brown cloud of un-burnt fuel.

Plus they use a tonne of fuel to taxi from the runway to the terminal, I'm not saying a tonne as in a lot, a tonne as in 1000kg of fuel for a taxi from runway to terminal.

With regards to BA/Airbus refusing to sell the fleet that's not quite right. BA will not sell to Virgin because since inception Branson's been up them like a cock mounted puppet.

Airbus refuse to act as design authority for the aircraft or hand over design data. You would need to find a massively ballsy design authority to be willing to take on that aircraft. The insurance premiums on the BA146/AvroRJ were eye opening andf they have pretty good records for safety etc.

Fuck them. Wankers.

They were bitter than we got there first with commercial supersonic travel and I suspect that was one of the reasons why it was originally banned from JFK/NY. Wasn't until the dumb fucks realised that their own AF1 (Boeing 137?) was louder than they allowed it to land at JFK.

Still, I can't see it flying ever again certainly not commercially. Although I’ve heard they are making one air worthy for the Olympics.

Really cannot see it being resurected for the Olympics. Afaik it is out of certification and without DA support won't get it back and can't be paperwork wangled like the Vulcan as a work around

An A380 would be far more appropriate for an Olympic flypast.

No, a Spitfire/Hurricane/Lancaster fly over would be far better.

They already kyboshed all of them plus the vulcan and red arrows as displays of militaria are apparently not appropriate.

One of the main reasons for the concord thing I heard was because of money.
Apparently when commissioned, they make X amount of aircraft, and offer support, parts and modifications for XX number of years (at a huge cost) This period has expired, so therefore you now have 40year old Concord's that need an XE style "rebuild" and overhaul. Cost would be astronomical thus, not commercially viable. Which means they don't fly anymore.

As for dissing the Americans, anyone ever heard of a Skytrain? Or a 707?

But we did.

Which is a shame, becuase IMO its one of the most beautiful designed aircraft ever. Graceful and still futuristic.

I don't disagree, I spent the last 4.5yrs of my life working on it

Equally, the yanks had some interest in its capabilities.

They lead the world in aviation, airbus and typhoon might like to think they have a counter arguement, they don't.

Awesome.

They never usually give the Lancaster any stick on the BOB memorial flight. Went to the royal air tattoo last year and they gave it some excellent manoeuvres, 4merlins on full chat sweeping fly bys. Very cool

Good to see an old 757 in an 80's livery makes it more special

Concorde makes me sad every time I see it

Would love to see one fly again for display purposes

Remember sitting at home watching the last flight live when they showed it
