Massive destruction

Haven't heard from my mate over there if she's ok, but since she's a paramedic I'm thinking replying to messages isn't top priority just now.

Sounds very bad from the BBC site

A friend from VxON who moved back there (she is a native) works in one of the buildings that went down from what I can gather

Luckily she is ok, and was seen on local news helping to get people out

They aren't having the best of it down in that Oz/NZ corner at the moment!

Same

I never realised New Zealand is actually split into 2 land masses, he's in the north. Is there not normally a threat of tsunami's after a massive earthquake?

You never heard them referring to the north island and south island?

There's only really a tsunami risk where the epicentre is located a fair distance offshore. The shock wave needs deep water to produce the swell then the shallowing around land masses creates the tidal wave that does the damage.

Nup but then I'm not really one for discussing the geography of New Zealand too often

He never mentioned it either, I doubt he even knows tbh
