Buying the phone outright and going on a much better value sim contract ftw.

Depends on overall cost and if you have the 400 quid up front.

Still works out more expensive than the iPhone 4 12 monnth contract and you don't need quite as much up front.

AndyKent, that was the case when the 2/3G and maybe 3GS came out due to having to pay extra for unlimited texts, however they all come with unlimited and not 500 texts now.
I'm sure it's slightly cheaper to get a contract with the phone now.
EDIT; Just looked at Tesco's 12-month contract prices and o2 handset prices;
For the 16GB
12 x 25 + 342 = £642
12 x 20 + 504.99 = £744.99
12 x 20 + 504.99 - 100 = £644.99 (£20 12-month contract, £100 cashback)

you just seem to have to pay £100 extra for an iphone4, all the tarriffs are the same.

True, I wouldn't take a contract out over the internet without getting cashback though
£150 cashback with current iPhone contracts as well (at least with QuidCo)

Just checked this and you're right, I'll sell/trade in my 3GS and get a 12-month contract with Vodafone when the new one launches I think
