Its not a later head at all, They were produced side by side. And no from the factory XEL came with a x14xe head, And as I said before, a X14 head is identical to a X16XE head.
Z16XE is a whole different ball game.

xel came with two different head x14xe with small ports and one with larger different shaped triangular ports which by sbd are considered the best ports better than c16xe even. You only have do do a suick search online to find this out and also see pictures of the difference

well the ifs it an xel head its got a different rocker cover and inlet manifold i believe and if x14 head it'll look like the normal sport engine or you could look at the part numbers on the head?
do a search on the number i have found out wich is which by doing that, sbd website has part number for few heads aswell saying which is which

apparently the block are the same though and the heads swap over but x14 head will have x14 cams

should have the best head then with the triangular ports, have a look on google at what xel looks like anyway and compare to what yours looks like, you'll know for definate which it has on then
