My input on this would be that I'd choose the c16 as the better engine through design, but
As it was the early small block 16v it suffered wrong size piston rings from the factory (was a call back through Vauxhall) but they are a more "raw" engine than the x16 which was subject to Vauxhalls manufacturing cost, meaning castings ect were not as perfect. I have owned two tuned x16's and I have not had a problem though.

I've had 4 x16xe's and 1 c16xe. Had issues with all of them tbh unreliable oil burners. Even my current one needs the head coming off

The rumor is lotus designed the head/inlet on the baby xe's, But yes they also apparently had a input in 1997 to change the front suspension setup slightly.

I've had 4/5 baby xe's..

X16XE - Faultless, I bought it with a snapped belt after a garage ripped off the previous owner
X14xe - Bought from a corsa going XE, Put into the nova, Almost faultless, But I never finished it.
X14XE - Done the cambelt, lifters and shell bearings, knocked a bit but was faultless.
Current Sport, Head gasket and stem seals needed doing, But was running with loads of things lose and not how they should be, Ran perfect though and never properly broke down until the head gasket went in big style.

Prob missed one or two, I can't remember.
I might of just been lucky.

Worked on a couple of pain in the arse ones, Mainly Chris F's with his weird 5k idle solved by changing the battery.
