I've been in my new house since Christmas and have had a new ex-directory number since January.

Twice I have had some company call asking for the previous owner.
The first one was English and I ripped her a new one and demanded my number be removed from their database and asked how they got this number for the previous owner.
She agreed to remove number but wouldn't tell me where they got the number from.

I've just had an Indian woman do the same thing, As soon as I asked where the number was obtained she said sorry and hung up.

Next time I think the phone will be smashed to pieces

Susprise surprise the last number that called is not available. Question is what can I do to stop these calls?

i don't get many, probably 1 or 2 a month.

i find the more you put your number in online when getting quotes on anything, the more frequently you get called.

Cheers Brett, I'll register with them.

I have found so far my aggressive attitude seems to keep them away for a while. If I can find out who the company are i'll be contacting them direct.
I think next time they ask for the old dear who used to live here i'll say 'i'll just get her, Can I ask who's calling please'

Then i'll pounce

I don't give my number out to many. My house number is with about 5-6 mates and family I know.
The Mrs is a different matter. She put her mobile and house number on some survey site and now some wankers called Premium Genie keep calling the house. I've checked up online and they seem quite persistant.
My tact with those is simple, I tell them to piss off and put the phone down. I can't wait until I mistake mum for them and tell her to drop dead

I'd love to believe that'd work. They have already ignored my strong insitance that my number be removed from file.

The thing that has pissed me off is the fact they're using MY number to call her. She has never been associated to that number.
So somebody is using 2 databases, The one linking the number to the house and one linking her to the house.

I'm assuming they've got a list with numbers to houses and using electoral register to get the residents name.

From what I can gather the old lady they're asking for hasn't lived here for 3 years or more. She split from her husband when some unsavoury revelations came out about him and he's lived here since.

I hate call centres, half the reason why I wouldn't work in one. I live with my Gran 5 days a week and she gets one or two pretty much every day. Every time they phone I tell them to take the number off their records but they phone back the next day!

Sign up to that, and then after about 30 days if you get any further calls tell them you are on the TPS and demand they remove your number immediately or their company will be facing legal action if they call again in future.

Had a problem like this but with British Gas calling for the previous occupant of this house, in the end I had to make an official complaint in writing and threatened court action as they seemed to ignore my requests to remove my number.

Got a letter in the post apologising again and now they don't call again.

The problem is when you have "withheld" or "unavailable" or "international" numbers calling and it's a bloody recorded message, I still get those!

You can get BT to block calls where the person witholds their numbers, however one company that called up had a number of "01234567890" on my caller display.

You can register business numbers on that TPS thing Tom, I've had to do that with my business numbers too.

Me too, although they don't refer to it as a call centre where I work

Any out bound calls we do are courtesy calls to members. We don't call strangers.

I buy leads online, and then get telesales people to phone them up and get the deal. Expensive, but worth it. Saves a fat phone bill cold calling.
