How much would you charge to do a Part P test for a 4 bedroom house?
I've been quoted £150 for a "full test" by a mate.
Is that cheap or not?

Sounds about right. I paid £100 for my flat with a much smaller footprint.

No such thing as a part P test.
Probably a PIR, £150 would be going rate, anything more would be expensive.
PIRs (periodic inspection report) usually carried out every ten years on a domestic property or before a property is let out to a new tenant.
You dont need to be part P registered to carry out a PIR.

Sorry, not sure what it's called. Basically we had a large 2-storey extension with a lot of new electrics but it was never certified by the guy. So we need to get someone in to certify it.

Thats the funny thing. The PIR check is actually not that in depth. Its only if there is a problem they start to dig deeper, it specificlly does not certify previously completed work. Its just a general check that everything appears to be OK. You could still have a lot of bad stuff hidden away but there is no way to check this without a lot of intrusive work.

Isn't there some sort of check/test that needs to be done to validate house insurance? That's what we need.

You need to speak to your insurance company to see what they actually need.
Nobody else can sign off someone else's work (installation certificate) without having seen it before its boarded/plastered/finished etc...
A PIR should be sufficient for insurance companies, was the extension done whilst you owned the property?

You need a job in health and safety!!
Loads of people just test without seeing before. Playing by the book gets you nowhere!

Are you on about periodic inspections? Anyone can do a periodic
Installation certificates have to been completed by the person carrying out the installation. No one else should do it as you are putting your name to work that you cannot guarantee is safe or in accordance with wiring regs or building regs.
I don't need a job in health and safety thanks.
Not playing by the book could see you on a lengthy sentence for killing someone so I'll play by the book thanks, already far too many fucking idiots out there ruining the trade and giving bad names to the people who have the skills qualifications and experience a tradesman needs.

If you've not got a previous certificate then you want a full Installation Certificate doing so you're on the straight and narrow.
Part P is a Red Tape piece of shit that means Sparkies pay money each year (to the NICEIC wankstains) and in turn you're allowed to test Domestic properties, unfortunately its neccesary.
I test hospitals, schools, shopping centres, uni's and don't need Part P to do it yet i'm not allowed to test a Domestic Premises.
On an Installation Certificate you have a box that says 'New Installation' or 'Exisiting Installation' i'd personally get a full Installation Certificate done.
Like I say, if you havent got a previous cert for it then you have nothing to bases your current test readings on.
I've been a Sparky for 13 years now and have done my 2391 Test, Inspection and Certification course.
