We've just got a couple of new workstations with Windows 7. On a network with about 25 workstations in total, all the other stations are XP but the server and the new stations are Windows 7.

We've got an IT guy but not having any joy with him, basically I don't think he knows how to fix it.

Every day I get a message saying my profile hasn't loaded properly and sometimes all my shortcuts have disappeared never to be seen again. This is the same on the other workstation with Windows 7.

When using AutoCAD it'll be working fine then every now and then when hatching or saving it'll freeze completely. CTRL, ALT & DELETE does nothing. Have to turn it off at the plug. Never used to have these problems with XP.

Is it common for this kind of thing to happen with 7? Or is it just us? It's doing my tits in.

Is the server box actually running Windows 7 or Home Server/Small Business Server?

OK. Well it sounds like there's an issue with your Windows 7 roaming profiles and no it shouldn't happen.

Someone like Andrew will probably be better placed to advise on this.

Brett

I try not to get involved with Windows Server stuff if I can help it, although I think I will probably have to if I'm to start designing higher spec networks for companies.

Isn't that the sort of thing he supports in his day job?

Anyways, I just did a quick Google search and it seems the issue happens when you have a mixed XP/Vista/7 network, problem with profile imcompatabilities or some shit like that?

Not sure why we have roaming profiles, we all have our own specific desks and workstations to work at

I can't get on the server, don't know the admin username or password. Thats another thing, I cant even do windows updates without it asking for a password

roaming profiles protect you if your own hardware was to fail. But to be honest i would just have a mapped drive for your home drive and you just tell everyone if its not put in there its not backed up.

The company i work for do consultancy based work if your interested?

TBH I guess what I wanted to establish was if its just our IT guy or Windows 7. Sounds like its 50/50

He should be able to sort it quite easy.

I would remove the roaming profiles and have local profiles and a Home folder created to store documents on.

Small company?

Sack the roaming profiles off, they're awful.

Stick to local profiles - and redirect all the document folders
