Hello, sorry for the repetitive type thread but in my defence it's my first ever!
My dad's looking for a new motor just now and I'm trying to get him to open his eyes to new things. He's had Mercedes for the last 30 years and he's quite stuck in a rut with them just now. He currently drives a 53 plate E270 CDI and loves it, he's just looking for something a bit more up to date.
He's got a budget of up to about £20,000 and he's been stuck on looking at newish shape C-Class diesels (the model before the one released this year) and he's been looking at Audis, BMs and the like as well, but with no real intention of considering them imo. He loves the XJ Jags as well but needs a bit of persuading towards them still. He would want something with a bit of poke but would much prefer massive comfort over massive speed.
So ideally he's looking for a diesel 'executive', no older than an 07, he loves his Mercs but would definetely consider anything of the same type. He's also a bit fuddy duddery so wouldn't be up for travelling far for one.
Anyone with any suggestions fire away please

Newer shape E-Class seems best bet tbh.

Newer shape E-class in budget is most basic of basic John, I think he'd rather a spec'd C-class than that.
Ben J, a bit biased are we lol he's said he's not too keen on them unfortunately

I think the A4 is awesome.
I chose it as a neutral after looking at the C-Class Sport and BMW 3 Series M Sport dervs.

Are Alfa's still notoriously expensive for parts? I remember a mate of mine a few years back getting a trade price on a back box for his 146 ti of about £200+

Not sure.
Won't be any more expensive than Audi/Merc/BMW though.

Some great suggestions, i've showed him a couple of XFs as well they're a lot of car for the money. I've shown him some of the cars posted but he's just a fussy bastard and keeps turning his nose up - the motor he's looking at quite seriously just now is a blueefficiency c class on a 10 plate, 28k for 17,000. I've told him to get a grip but unfortunately he won't, the draw of a year old car is too much.

The C-Class is a great car. Especially in Sport trim.
I just felt I was too young for a Merc. And my Dad has one.
