I want to sort the garden out this summer.

Rip it all up and start fresh, grass seed, make some borders, then decide what to plant!

Why?
We live in a rented property.
We have maintained our house well, including re-doing the garden.
As such we have not seen our rent increase in over 5 years. The landlord knows he has a tenant that looks after the property and updates it, so he does not have to pay out for modernising it.

All you seem to be missing is a hot tub.
I'd leave the garden personally. Mine is a pain in the arse because of all the flowers and shit.
Mowing the lawn is annoying enough.

I wouldn't bother with it if rented, maybe some chairs, a paddling pool and a BBQ

Wouldn't exactly cost a lot to re-turf it and if its something you use a lot well worth improving. Doesn't matter if its rented or not.
Besides, the landlord wouldn't be obliged to improve it if that was the condition it was in when the property was let. Sold as seen style.

Ok, so say our rent is £200 a month ( it is not, this is for ease)
We just paid £500 to redo the garden.
We have previously decorated most of the house, to a cost of around £500.
So that is £800.
We have been living here for about 5 years or more.
No rent increase in that time. The same properties in the area (based on proportion to our eg rent) are around 750-800 a month now.
So for saving £3,000-3500 a year, I don't think it is money badly spent. Obviously we pay out for small things as well, like if an electrical socket goes wrong.
End of the day, our landlord likes that he gets his rent paid on time every month, which covers his mortgage, and we get cheap rent.

We rented the same house for 3 years and we put a shower in, painted and put some wood floor in a small kitchen i dont see my self as wasting money as i like how it was for the three years we was there, we bought a house earlier this year and so far spent a fortune bathroom, kitchen, windows allsorts of things you would only do when you buy

Yep, thats what I mean, 3 years is a good time, in which you decorate for how you want.
For 6 months, it is temporary and would do.
