I was reading in our DIY book the other day something about sun pipes - basically a way of lighting up a room using the power of the sun with a pipe going from the roof to (I guess) a room upstairs.

Apparently even in an overcast day it still outputs the equivalent of 100w.

Anyone have any real life experience with this?

can i just ask why you would want or need lights on when its sunny outside, and when you would need light, eg. at night, it would be useless

It's for rooms that won't have much natural light otherwise, so you'd potentially require a light on during the day anyway.

thats when we put them in, had a job last month i had to use 2 of them, due to a bedroom overlooking a neighbours house so they couldn't have a window, and it had a truss'd roof so normal velux wouldn't work

Well a couple of the rooms in our new place doesn't get much sunlight in due to tall trees/way the house faces etc. and so I thought this would be a cool idea of introducing more light into said rooms (and is more 'greener' too).

Obviously at night time if the rooms were in use then yes the lights would be turned on.

Saw these on grand designs. Was amazing how much light came out of them!

They're pretty good I think. Usually we'd put them in small rooms like toilets which are positioned in awkward locations (can't have a window) and are too small for a rooflight.

Perfect example is a small toilet in a side extension where a window would overlook the neighbour.

Rooflights are better if you have the space, but if you don't these are smart.

Look up monodraught, they're pretty much the market leader.
