im assuming h/gasket
he's just got a mk4 astra sri, x20xe
i looked under the bonnet and the first thing i noticed is that the coolant tank has had some dog shite in, radwelds or something.... cant see anything visually to show the h/gaskets gone, but hes only just got it so cant say its useing water yet but when we came off the motorway yesterday it was at well over 100 degrees, fan was working overtime lol...
its got a leaky rocker too...
smoke coming out the exhaust seemed ok though
what would his options be bearing in mind he doesn't know a lot about engines at all.
seems to be slow for what it is like

You would expect the car to cool on the motorway as air is passing through the radiator.
Did the fan bring the temp back down?

aye mate, you'd expect that, eventually yeah turned the engine off but leaf the ignition on... fan took its time for the temp to drop

I'd check/change thermostat and flush the coolant system first.
