Are you supposed to put sand down before you lay them?

As in flag stones?

Can either lay them on a compacted bed of sand or lay them on a cement mixture.

Normally you would lay them on sand and you could put some dry mix cement on top to give it some additional flavour.

best on cement as sand will shift and slab will then crack if driven on

These were just some old, massive slabs that were on our front garden before we got it all block paved.

I'm just using them as a little path to a gate we've got separating the back garden (part of it we've closed off as we've got two dogs and don't want them fouling the entire back garden).

I've laid them already, although without sand.

What happens if I leave them as they are (laid on soil)? Would they sink into the ground or something?

I might add, this is only fairly temporary as some point in the near future we're going to get the back garden sorted out anyway.

I would of laid them down using sand seen as they're old ones and probably different thickness. Trouble with concrete is that it'll be a pain to lift them back up and makes a right mess of them underneath and harder to make adjustments to get level.

Luckily you wont be putting much weight on them seen as it's just a path but when it rains i can see it making a right mess. If it does then just get some sand and lay them again.

Yeah it took me ages to get each one level!

I just wanted to put them on for now as the old path was just soil/old bricks (!) and looked a bit crap.

If it does start going uneven I'll get some sand/concrete mix put under each one and reseat them.

You've put them down now so you may aswell leave them until they start to sink. If you're re-doing the area anyway you may aswell just put up with it until then. My drive used to have flags down and they were a pain in the ass so i eventually took them all up and block paved it all.
