They are both very nice cars.
However im going to be brave and say that i think the 1M front end is starting to look dated. Not sure if that's because all i have done over the last week is look at the new 1 & 3series or whether its just actually that im not a massive fan of it.

Reminds me of a mini shorty, where they have just taken couple of feet out the middle and welded it back up, but to changed any other proportions.

I think they're both bloody lovely btw and would be chuffed with either.
I remember when the first ordinary 4 door hatch, 1 series came out and I saw a dark one on bigger wheels and slightly lowered and thought what a cracking looking little car it was for an every day hatchback, plus how good it was that it was RWD.
Then the Coupe came out and got ///M'd and I just fell in love with it.
I've adored both E36 and 46 M3s since their inception too, almost as much as the E30.
