Got all my music and pics on our old PC which is in a cupboard. Got work laptops that we use for internet etc.
Want to dump all our pics and music onto something to save them incase the PC goes tits up now its not in use at all.
Whats best way of doing this?
Portable hard drive?

Doesn't even need to be a portable one, any hard drive that you can get that much data on would do.

Will be getting a decent laptop for personal use when funds allow so its not long term as such.
If the PC goes FUBAR. Is the music/pics recoverable?

Just get a 2nd drive 500gb or 1tb's are cheap now get a decent brand WD or something, copy the whole C Drive onto once every ew weeks, then everything will be backed up.
The only thing i ever worry about is pictures as these cant be replaced, music and other stuff can.

I mean in addition to the drive in the PC.
Easiest way is a portable one that you can plug in over USB, yes.
You can recover the stuff but a copy would be easier. But they're never normally lost forever, just need to be retrieved correctly.
Problem you might have is there was flood in Thailand and the prices have gone up -

As they say in IT, if something doesn't exist in 2 seperate places, it doesn't exist!

Here's a few other options for file backups.
SugarSync lets you sync stuff across different computers and it keeps a backup of things in 'the cloud'. https://www.sugarsync.com/
Jungledisk just does backup and storage, but it's a bit cheaper, but your stuff is stored in the cloud and you can access it via the internet. https://www.jungledisk.com/

Though I've got a Netgear ReadyNas with two Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD's in a RAID. Basically, if one fails you stick another one in and the data mirrors back across it. You could have two disks in your PC and do the same thing for backups or you could have a separate box to do it, like a NAS.

Adding to Ed's cloud backup, have a look at http://www.backblaze.com (also worth checking out their blog for info on their storage pods, geeky but ) - £2.50 p/m for unlimited storage. Haven't had any issues yet.
And yes, a NAS would be a good solution if you always wanted access to your media; otherwise stick to regular backups onto a portable drive. Can always use something like SyncBack.

I image all my laptops so i have a proper back up i can reload in 30 mins or so should i have a problem. Also have a 1Tb external drive with my C: drives dumped onto.
I agree, if it doesent exist in atleast 2 places it doesnt exist at all.

Does that work separately to Time Machine? The screenshots on the website look like Time Machine, but ideally I'd like to keep NAS and remote backups.

I assume so, certainly that's the case on Windows as you use BackBlaze's own software.

Just realised their website adapts depending on what your user agent is so that might have been a bit of a stupid question if everyone else looks at it on a Windows computer

Is that just for iOS cloud storage or is the free 50GB accessible from Windows/OSX as well?

I can see it from logging onto the website as well so would have to say you can get it anywhere.
