Corsa GSi isn't old school either.
Old school for me is the stuff which was in Max Power before I was driving, and I passed in 95, Corsa was only 2.

Well put it this way it would do a genuine 9.40 round the ring oh and wouldn't spend it's time understeering around the gp circuit claiming to have some "talent" as you like to put it.
Of course I can't make a concise comment as a modest character like yourself has a wealth of track experience with the three that you have done.

Also want to be able to drive it without it blowing up so that rules out turbo conversions.

TBF my Clio 16v handled very well, i have a pic somewhere of it lifting its rear wheel up.
The list of cars that fit in into 'old skool' cars for me are:
Nova
Astra mk2
Fiesta mk1/2/3
Escort mk1/2/3/4
Uno i.e Turbo
R5 GTT
Clio mk1
R19 Ph1
205 GTi
309 GTi
Charade Turbo
Golf GTi mk1/2
AX GT
Mk1 Swift
CRX
Starlet mk1
Anything put into production withing 20 years ago isnt what id call 'old skool'

An S2 rallye would be the sensible choice but it isnt old skool at all! I've been tempted to get a blue xsi with the red pinstripe and make it immacualte, but maybe a bit boring.
R5 is the best option but could get a pain being so unreliable.
I love CRXs but i can't imagine you liking them.
309s are cool.
