Going to New York in 3 weeks and wanted a bit of advice on picture taking

I have a Nikon D40, what's best settings to have it on for day/night pics and so it doesn't blur cause I'm not taking my tripod.

I usually just leave it on auto but I want some good pics.

Just have it on as fast a shutter speed as possible to prevent blur, but keep an eye on the light meter to make sure you're not under exposing.

If you're in lower light levels and struggling to use a fast enough shutter speed, just increase your ISO.

ps. The light in NY isn't going to be any different to light here, so go out with your camera and practice.

Cheers. I know the light won't be different but I want good night time pics from like the top of empire state building so can't practice that here

Best bet is to find something to rest the camera on then.
Or invest in one of those gorillapods.

Personally I would make room for a tripod, how often do you get to go to New York!
