Nope. I would only add people after I started at a new company. It suggests that you think you've got the job.

I don't use trash like linkedin, but if I did and someone came for an interview and added me after, I'd penalise them for trying to butter me up.

It's surprisingly effective. I've gotten 2 interviews just from people that have contacted me on LinkedIn.

Cool. I get calls most days without being registered on any social websites.

So do I but they are usually a load of rubbish. The most relevant enquiries I've had come from LinkedIn.

Sounds like you need better agents then tbh, never once had a call about a job that's not related to me.

Well, I'm not saying I get calls for chef vacancies

They are usually either a lot less money than I already earn or in a business area that I have no interest in.

So how would linkedin ensure you get jobs that are for more money? Do you put how much you earn on there?

No, but it's got a lot of information about the kind of level I'm working at, my corporate title, responsibilities etc.

TBH, I wouldnt really do it via the social networking site, seems a bit..... informal
(albiet the site is all about that).

If you have their email address, I would probably send an email through.
