Do you have the same display settings for both inputs though? Any difference in picture quality is more likely to be the set up of the display, there shouldn't be much to choose between hdmi and component on Xbox.

same settings on tv, its a new xbox only ever been plugged in via hdmi since last night. old xbox was a component one, picture definitely looked better. odd.
