Some bigger 'better' brakes are more progressive, well thats my experience anyway.

OE 286s on both Impreza and Skyline could be locked up on 888's.... i dont find it any easier to lock up the bigger ones.... they just do the bit inbetween more efficiently

some of the 300bhp turbo vx boys still use standard brakes but just change the pads.. thats a 100bhp increase.

i had 330mm discs on the vx but now only 308mm the braking i have is better now due to the better pads and calipers.

upgrading the power without brakes and suspension is fine if your on the road and just want to play traffic light drag races...

sometimes they are yes, its one of the reasons why i changed my brakes to the ones i have now..

but going back to the fact were talking about a road car, upping the brakes for 20/30 bhp isnt needed.. imo.

Think people need to look beyond disc size... and look into master cylinder size, pad quality, brake fluid quality, caliper quality etc...

Some VR6 turbo's are doing near 500 horse with not much fettling!

Road use i'd want a 312mm set up to keep smallish size wheels with some decent quality discs and DS2500's would be fine i think.

Some track work or a really silly drive possibly something bigger, most defenitly some castrol racing brake fluid or similar, carbone lorraine pads or similar, all depends on the application.

As said earlier bigger isnt always better.

most 'normal' road cars I have driven have all had fade.

Normal = anything with standard brakes

Corsas (B and C), Rangey, Supra, Skyline, 3 fiats, alfa......

its not been fade from 1 large stop though.... more like prolonged heat build up on twisty B roads with corner after corner that requires braking

I like my 323mm brakes and cheap £27 mintex pads. They're the perfect combo for normal road driving and the occasional spirited drive.

Locking wheels in a standard car = enough brake pressure and pad grip so tyres are the next thing to look at.

Brake fade in a standard car = heat dissapation not good enough, more likely to happen with solid discs.

If you get fade after a while driving B roads id put money on them being solid discs, id look at seeing if i could put vented discs on but same size.

The bigger the disc the larger surface area the pad can grip to with an added bonus of dispersing the heat build up. It will slow you down fast as the tyres will allow without locking up.

Tyres are the key to good braking imo.
