I always know when my card has been done because it goes all the way into the chip and pin machine. Happened twice last year and my card was done twice.

We use Barclaycard for our card terminal/chip and pin machine, they charge us about 1.5% for credit card transactions and a flat rate of a few pence for debit cards.
They pay the money straight into an account with Bank of Scotland, who don't charge us anything.
However we have had the bank account in place for 13 years and the card machine deal is about 2 years old now. So I'm guessing these deals will no longer be available.

No they don't. Square is only available in the US, it's not likely to catch on over here as there's a requirement to use chip and pin.

We are beginning to look into other markets, though at the time we can't officially support banks, cards or merchants outside of the 50 United States and DC. There is no specific timeline for international availability, but we'll be sure to announce any international expansion, including availability in US territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam.

Also, banks invested all that money into switching over to chip and pin a few years back because they became liable for fraudulent transactions. I don't think they're likely to go back to magnetic strip technology that's easily cloned just because Jack from Twitter wants them to.
