so say you wanted to have a football query website ( i dont) that you could check results the last time two teams played and it searched the fixtures on the bbc site for the answer, is that allowed?

Basically screen scraping?

Not ethical but not illegal, better off scraping the data and storing it in a database on your own website rather than constantly querying the BBC website though.

Depends on what you're doing - a lot of websites have a public API for doing exactly this sort of thing.
