Somebody I know has bought a new laptop but forgotton their email password
It's a @btconnect.com one, so its possible to just phone up BT and sort it.
Went to their house last night, couldn't sort it, did the retrieve password thing on the BT site, and got the secret answer correct only to find the new password went to er@erer.er or some rubbish
After been there half an hour, they told me their password is still on their office computer and logs in fine, so how can I get the password off that?
Ideally without going there, because its a good 40 mins away.
I've obviously Googled it, but its a load of software that requires registration, and signing up for £900 per month etc.
Any help is appreciated...!

I've used something in the past, have you exported the settings file? (Can you do that in OE?)

Remember what it was Dave?
No, I ideally don't want to go there. Just tell him to install X and it'll show him the password

If you can get access to the office desktop then you should be able to export the account settings in the Internet Accounts dialog and then import it on the home system; although i can't remember if you have to enter the password when you go to import the account.
Be easier to phone BT and get them to reset it though.
What about this, it might work - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/astlog.html
or this for Win7 - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bullets_password_view.html
Both appear to be free from the quick scan of the page.

two options:
Install one of them password recovery tools which you will need 'find' from the 'shop'
or install a packet sniffer like wireshark on their PC with the password on, run it to listen for POP3/IMAP traffic depending on how they connect to it and then start outlook. The password will be in clear text when it transmits it over the Internet unless they are using some sort of secure method which I doubt.

Good thinking Willay, POP3 passwords are plain text

yes Dave, so is IMAP, but I'm sure there is some funky implementations of POP3 such as pop3s which encrypt it IIRC.
I very much doubt BT have this though

I highly doubt it
POP/IMAP/SMTP are age old protocols that haven't really changed much in the YEARS they've been used

Good ideas...
That Nursoft thing worked Dom....! (On mine anyway)
Seems pretty idiot proof, so will tell him to install it.
Thanks a lot for all your replies
