Phone itself is over a year old but brand new, Have only just started using it a few months ago from new
I fail to see it can be the speaker itself as it works fine on loud speaker, they can hear me perfect but off they cant hear anything

get into an apple store, if its only just over a year old theyll more than likely just give you a new one on the spot

Don't think it'll matter if it's on contract?

Nothing to do with any screen protectors or anything?
I couldnt hear anyone at first but realised the screen protector covered the top where my the ear goes

It's the dicky headphone jack problem.
Get a pair of headphones, and plug them in and remove them quite vigorously for a minute or so, should sort it out.

Doesn't always bring up the headphones logo though, had it on the blackberrys in work too. Googling your problem though and it does seem like theres a common fault on the 4's with that
I've had a similar issue on my Ipod touch though. Using the talking carl app was best way to diagnose it for me and I replaced the headphone flex and it was ok. I plugged in a headset, it would use the mic source from the headset (touch's have no mic) however audio would still come out the ipod instead of the earphones.

Right still have this issue, Ive tryed plugging in the headphones and pulling them out quick ect still no joy.
Ive tryed making a phone call with the headphones in and they can hear me clear like a normal call!
Just very odd that i can make calls with the phone on loud speaker and headphones in but cant bloody make a normal call without them!
I took the phone to a back street shop that does shoe repairs and fixs mobiles too, He said he made a phone call to someone and its 100% water damage now this is very odd because the phone has NEVER EVER been next to or near to water! IF this was water damage surely everything else wouldnt work too!
he said it would be £50 to fix but cant be 100% sure it would fix the problem
Im still 100% that this is NOT the problem because its never ever been near water!

Like I said, you should have gone in. Face to face they have been known to just swap them when they're just out of warranty.
Also isn't there this whole 2 year fit for purpous thing you can throw at them?

Yeah I would have just taken it into the store and explained that even though it's over a year old you've only started recently using it from new.
