Long story short, its something i want to start doing yet have no experience or know nothing about it.

I have no equipment, and the only time i have ever touched a 'mixing set' (is that the word?) was at a house party, steaming at about 8am just moving switches and generally not a clue what was going on. It had more buttons than i could control, it was like a cockpit!

I dont want to start doing viynl, just something with a laptop and cd's/hardrive as i already have that stuff. What programes to use? What to buy? Any forums to read up and how to do it?

This will soley be something i do in my spare time, as a laugh so i dont want to spend mega money or try and impress people - i dont plan on playing an pacha just yet

Any help info apreciated!

You can get cheap dj controllers from maplins or off the internet with simple functions (fader, volume and mixer). They come with basic software which is good for practicing with.

Not really got a budget as such (doesnt mean i want to spend thousands on something i might not even like). Not really sure what is cheap/expensive for what what each product does to be honnest.

Any recomendations? obviously cheaper the better

personally wouldnt go too cheap, as it will put you off, I've heard the hercules controllers are pretty good value for money when you're starting off. I'd get on djforums and introduce yourself, someone on there will point you in the right directions, I by no means a good DJ but I've got the kontrol S4 and its a lovely bit of kit and that cost me £700ish with traktor pro software...

Hercules RMX you can get for around £150-200

or numark omni control isn't too for starting out bad I had one years back

Numark Mixtrack pro is a very good one for a beginner. Make sure you get one with a built in sound card

go have a go on someone elses setup and try decide if its for you, if your new and cant do anything your in for a frustrating first few months getting use to your setup, learning the music structures, matching beats, adding techniques and then developing your own style

im into it coz i love it so if you think you like music enough to have a go its deffinatly worth a shot in my eyes, i took it up a while back now and have a fairly nice setup for a 'hobby'

Watch all of this guys videos, then if you still think youre interested go and buy a Numark mixtrack/n4 or something similar.

you normally get the software suited to the mixer with it.

cheers folks. I have been looking at the numark mixtrack ones (the one that stuck out most to be as ease of use, price, capability from watching youtube vids etc). I think something like that would take me a long while to master so anything better would be more than a waste on me.

I had a Hercules RMX, bought in January and sold 2 weeks ago for something with a bit more functionality. Using a mixtrack pro while I'm waiting for money back on PayPal and then getting a numark n4.

I'd say the mixtrack pro is better for using effects on traktor and the jog wheels a better, but the RMX is much better built and has 2 inputs

He might as well buy a controller with traktor LE included free, as traktor isnt cheap
