Ive never fully understood DNS, I only know a small amount.

I have a domain (ovalhomes.com and ovalhomes.co.uk).
both domains were originally bought and registered through an IT contractor, this is not the case anymore.

123 Reg is the Registrar for both.

doing a quick domainwhois for ovalhomes.co.uk shows the following name servers;

ns.123-reg.co.uk
ns2.123-reg.co.uk

Logged into 123 Reg, this also appears to be the case.

Now, I know the domain is not hosted with the above company, its hosted with plusnet as we regularly update it.

My questions;
1, I thought the nameserver was always the server in which its hosted on? Have I mis-understood that?

2, Im looking to move my hosting to vidahosts, but dont want to touch email settings.
if I wanted to leave all the current mail settings in place, would I simply change the nameservers at 123 reg and leave the mx records as is, or would the nameservers change everything and I'll need to add new mx records vidahosts end to point back to the original provider?

Hope that makes sense

Name server and where it's hosted aren't related.
Registrar having DNS for the domain is probably more common but again not actually necessary.

MX records go with the nameservers, you'll either point ovalhomes.co.uk to the new hosting IP on the 123 reg name servers or you can move to vidahost DNS and create all the records in there, then you'll also have to tell 123reg that DNS is now done by vidahost in the control panel.

Just spotted, theres and @ and a domain A record pointing towards '212.56.83.199'.
this page is showing a default error page for plesk which is the management system for plusnet.

in order to leave the mail where it is, I assume i'll just need to point these two records towards vidahost?

Yip, should just be a case of changing the A records to the new hosting IP.
