i imagine its to get the phone thinner/smaller. everything else has shrunk over time like the chips and batteries etc.

Yeah they are, big fight with Nokia over a new SIM standard because we know what apple are like for suing companies regarding IP, like the cases between them and samsung (they use samsung chips and RAM) all over the world because the Galaxy S was a iPhone, fucking moaning bastards, its like suing someone because their cars use 4 wheels. They want a major foothold because they have licensed so many patents from other companies (antenna, 3G, and even patented the slide to unlock feature to fight android) they need something that everyone else will use so they can hold it against them when a courtroom battle kicks off. Its also the only reason Google has bought Motorola Mobility for the 13,000+ patents they own.
