pissing me the hell off, every so often i load internet explorer up and the homepage is "about blank"

Probably spyware rather than a virus. I'd run HiJackThis (download it from here - http://www.trendmicro.co.uk/products/free-tools-and-services/) and see what it reports.
Could also run CWShredder, which removes CoolWebSearch - http://free.antivirus.com/cwshredder/
Edit - If it's a work computer then get IT to sort it?

will go and try that, i do have some trend micro anti virus running, but its from work and i can't do much with the settings on it.

Is usually some annoying plugin/spyware/toolbar/add in that causes that to happen. Putting your PC in the freezer overnight ought to sort it.

Just run that HiJack this, its come up with a list of things, but i don't know what i'm meant to be looking for or which boxes to check and tell it to fix?

deleted a file, made me feel better about myself, computer is still working, doubt i've fixed it though.
