Would like to get an iPad, but need a 3G as for what I want it for I need GPS.

Has anyone got one on contract and do they think it's a fair deal? The way I see it is roughly £150 up front and then about £25 a month for 24 months, so £750 for two years. Or buy on up front for £400 and then just go PAYG on data.

The thing that puts me off the contract is the 24 month duration, WTF? Can you get shorter contracts for them anywhere?

If you bought an iPad outright (£499 for the current model with "4G"), using the 1GB GiffGaff example for 24 months (£180) that works out to a total cost of £679.

The iPad 2 is £70 less, using the above example would be a total cost of £609.

Think I'll just buy one outright - the contracts look like they're for mugs. I don't mind paying a bit extra as they've subsidised the device, but being locked in for two years is a bit rubbish.

Might even just buy a refurb iPad 2, too. I only want to be able to get National Geographic on it and another navigation app

The 3 iPad data plan is quite good. 1 month rolling contract, £15 a month, 15gb data. Seems to have good coverage whereever i've used it so far.

I have a wifi iPad, with a unlimited Internet contract on my iPhone, it's constantly connected at work and works brilliantly

I'd hazard a guess that tethering will only share the data connection from an iPhone. You can buy a standalone GPS receiver from Garmin that connects via Bluetooth but I've heard mixed reviews about them, then again, the in-built GPS module on an iPad isn't that great either.

How easy is it to network unlock an iPad (legitimately)? Think I'm going to buy a refurb that's on Vodafone - the Voda website says that their phones are usually network unlocked anyway but they don't explicitly say anything about iPads.

I'll need it to work on O2/Giffgaff as I'll be on WiFi for the majority of the time and will only need 3G once in a blue moon.

I've read a couple of things about the iPhone sending over the GPS data when tethered to iPad.

Ah right, problem is GiffGaff don't allow tethering and I'm not keen on JailBreaking anymore - far too buggy amongst other things.

Agree about the buggy thing, you can tell it's just not quite right.

Apparently they are, though I've figured it out. You contact Vodafone and they process the unlock for you - it's done Apple's end so they just need the device IMIE.

IIRC, networks are allowed to lock handsets but they have to be able to offer an unlock under European law (making the whole handset locking thing nonsense now).

It's not the 3G he wants the 3G version for.

Yup, the wifi version doesn't include GPS so it's no good for me.
