To cut a long story short, people who rented our house had lots of animals whiched used the grass as a toilet and killed half of it off. Now it looks awful. Last summer we put some seed down and it looks a lot better this year as its filled the dead patches, but the grass is still pretty thin. Is seeding it again the key or is there something else I can do?

Fertiliser, mix of sand /compost/seed in any patches and plenty of water in this hot weather should help

as above. Im in the same position too.
Water the grass loads in the evenings (around 6pm onwards) and make sure the lawn is drenched.

more seed, water and make sure the birds don't eat it all! if you have some form of a sprinkler then keep that on in an evening for a while.

We had the same last year. Had a massive just put wilko premier seed down. Did it every other week for bout 6 weeks and had grown thick and green in no time with plenty of water. Only thing is spread the seed or will have greener thicker patches than others like me.
