fixed it

had to use a mixture of those plasterboard fixings nismo posted and some masonry plugs with small screws.

the middle hook is still a bit loose but it stays up so it'll have to do.

it seemed everywhere i was screwing into kept hitting whatevers behind the plasterboard. never had a problem with anything else i've put up.

Whatever you keep hitting behind the plasterboard is what you want to be fixing into ideally.

Not really

If it's dry lined then Nismos fixings with a batten + lots of grip fix - then screw the pole hangars to the batten

Same issue with curtain poles with metal lintols, the only really sensible solution i've found is a batten wider than the lintol width (inc bearings) fix it either side of the lintol and grip fix the batten back to the plasterboard

I agree that battens are a good idea but, assuming it is dot and dabbed, the plasterboard fixings are still going to hit the blockwork/lintel unless it's a really big dab. If Ben is finding the ends are breaking off that's almost certainly what's happening.
