Do you struggle to listen to any form of music without listening for 'your' instrument?
I used to play the bass guitar and that's the instrument I can hear the clearest, frustrating at times.
Is it just me?

I'm sure everyone is the same in this sense. I play guitar and tend to pick out the riffs a lot.
My main issue is with that I did music production a few years ago and still do a lot of recording/engineering at home now. Before I decide if I like a song, I'll anylise the production/mixing of the track, it's really frustrating. There are some songs now that I just cant listen to because I've picked out something and I can't ignore it.
ie: My Last Serinade by Killswitch Engage, used to love the song but theres a really annoying rattle from the bass frets :@

I'm glad I don't do that, that'd drive me mental!
I just wonder if music would sound different if I had played the bass
It's so strange, I do it without thinking, then realise I've gone through the whole song playing the bass in my head

Nah, I notice everything but might be because I studied Music in general back in school.

I find my self listening to the isolated recordings of guitar if I can find them. I like them more than the song in most cases

I pick out bass a lot as well, strange because I've never played a bass but I do dabble in guitar

I dont do it for everything but i do try and listen out for little things in Hip Hop like samples etc which kind of make me end up spending a few hours trying to find the 2 seconds drum sample in a song etc my friends do it quite alot though and will listen for certain things.

Yeah I play synth / keys and always listen out for it. The Killers are the worst for it for me!

I play drums, and like you say, its the most "obvious" part of the song to me.

I've picked out most instruments ever since 2nd year music and being taught to guess what they were playing through Buddy Holly songs
