400k on a house is all well and good but I doubt i'll climb into one in my lifetime, not the way the worlds finances are going. Often makes me wonder how big a mortgage folk have got against them.

It's the stamp duty that scares me off going for something like that. 12K down straight away! You think the Government would want to encourage borrowing too. Fannies!

depends Colin really - some people have made quite a bit of money in the past circa Year 2000 and this has allowed people to get such large deposits for larger houses

I know from personal experience that if we hadn't have put down a considerable sum of money of our current house then we wouldn't have been comfortable with large mortgage payments
