I've got a works van for commuting so any car i choose would be evening and weekends BUT i go away a lot during summer so would be doing a few 100 mile trips whilst towing a trailer.
I could get a sensible car such as a diesel estate but then why not have something a bit more special or fun as i won't be doing that many miles? But then do i go for a van for practicality as i'd probably use it for quite a few things that you couldn't with a car? I could just keep going for cheap cars buts then they break more often once the mileage and age gets higher, so do i just pay more for a newer car and save on repairs and hassle?
I've looked at everything from Escort vans to an E90 325i Autovogue to Astra VXR's to Audi/VW estates.
There's a lot i like the look of but nothing more than others really as every category has something nice. I just can't seem to decide whether to go for a sensible all rounder and get a good car or get a great car and just compromise on somethings in the name of fun and only being young once!
Slightly baffled by the mention of a van, if you've already got a works van then surely a second van is pointless? If that's the case, you're after something that you're going to enjoy driving when you aren't driving the van. 100 miles is nothing in real terms. Nothing which is a realistic option is going to be uncomfortable enough to make 100 miles unbearable. What's this trailer too? What sort of size weight etc.? Does it cut out certain cars or is it a couple of hundred kgs that anything could pull?. The usage you've described probably doesn't really bring up the concern of petrol vs. diesel costs so I wouldn't concern yourself too much about being 'sensible' in that way so then it's down to new or old. That's down to personal preference and your comments seem to indicate a preference towards a newer car.

The works van is only for commuting i can't use it out of certain hours or at weekends without prior permission - plus its a Transit tipper so not exactly a normal van I was thinking small sized van so i can chuck tents, wetsuits, etc in it.
The trailer is only a few hundred kg's (jet ski and roller trailer) most things can pull it with ease but some things struggle with the hills and should i get a double trailer they will struggle even more.
Thanks for that though Mike its given me a bit more of a direction to head in now you've pointed out a few things i didn't really think of properly

I find something I like, make sure it's viable financially (insurance etc) then buy it.
Simple.

Buy somthing I like that I know I'll get my money back on, fix that needs fixing (if any), make it nice and tidy and probably sell a few months later. I was considering getting a brand new car but knowing I'll get bored of it I went against it.

if you're thinking about a van, don't - get the car derived version instead. i.e. get a berlingo car, not a berlingo van or an astra estate not an astra van. Much cheaper to insure and you can always blank the windows

Simple for me -
Is it shit?
Is it likely to break?
If the answer to the above questions is yea, I'm there.

I usually think about what my next dream car would be (well within reason lol) and I see if my budget can stretch that far. If it doesn't then I just go to the next best thing.
