Guys,
I am tempted to sort myself out with some speakers and a decent AV receiver before splashing out on a new TV towards Christmas time.
If I were to buy this one:

Would it be possible to airplay my MacBook Air to the TV to show the picture and audio? Or would I be restricted to just audio being played?
Obviously I will have to wait until I get the latest software update on the Mac before this is supported.
If it would just be audio then I might as well get a cheaper amp that doesn't offer AirPlay

I know it will not be as good as a separates system but surely a much better sound than the built in TV speakers

if you want to upgrade slowly, http://www.richersounds.com/product/1-box-home-cinema-systems/yamaha/yht196/yama-yht196 + apple TV. you can airplay mirror to that no problem, you 100% will have problems getting the denon to work

What will the media be stored on?
If you get a new tv it'll probably be 'smart' and you won't need AirPlay.

I have a pioneer vx512 (or something along those lines) got it from richer for about 180 and its spot on for me.

First off, the Denon 1912 really is a fantastic bit of kit. When testing it before buying the 2312 I found it quite musical compared to other lower end AVR's.
That being said, I'm in no way an audiophile.
Regarding the AirPlay feature, it won't do screen mirroring.
Actually it will not do AirPlay at all unless you connect it via LAN, which is a mystery to me.
The 1912 with a decent pair of bookcase speakers will not really be comparable to the Onkyo HTX22. Either kit is value for money though.
I'm not sure you'll find a cheaper AVR that's as good as the Denon 1912. Similarly priced kits from other brands will probably perform great too, but I'm certain most offer AirPlay today.
Like it's the case with 3D in TV's, AirPlay is not a feature that costs extra today. It's just a selling point, nothing else.

No wireless adaptor, so uses your network (which should have a WAP) for the transport mechanism. No doubt wireless is included in the higher-end/newer models.
Doug - As said though, the 1912 is a good bit of kit. Although i recommend you go an have a listen, preferably with your speaker package, before purchasing.

But if I wanted to run more wires to my receiver, I could just as easily use a USB / toslink / RCA cable to connect an external source.
The implementation of AirPlay without WiFi seems a half arsed solution.
My Sony blu ray from 2010 has LAN, which I think is excusable. Any 2012 products with network functionality but without WiFi is a joke.
Of course, I'm probably more upset about this than I should be, just because I didn't investigate this thoroughly enough before investing in the 2312.

I like Denons - The 1912 is a good bit of kit
I also like the sony stuff at the moment - The STR DH820 etc are cracking buys at the price

Sony will most likely have a way better menu layout than Denon, they're usually good at UI's.
I find the 2312 a bit messy at times.
Then, I've never entered the menu since setting it up, so not a huge selling point...

Hmmmm I am still in two minds!
I like the idea of the Onkyo all in one setup. But then I would love to buy a new set of Bookshelf speakers! Do they loose a fair bit of value when second hand? I have no qualms buying second hand if it represents good value

You'll probably not save a fortune buying second hand, but you will save some.
More importantly, speakers get better with age, so buying pre owned will ensure a better sound.
I'm guessing you'll want a full surround setup at some point!? Then an AVR should be a much more potent solution than the Onkyo.

If you don't care about AirPlay or 3D functionality, then look for a second hand Denon 1910 or 2310.

also pairing speakers and amps is quite key
Yamahas and Sony tend to sound quite bright so getting speakers to match is key otherwise the sound is comprimised

This may be a daft question...
For the rear speakers I would run both L and R rear cables around the same side of the room, one cable having an extra 6 feet or so in length. Would this make a massive difference to the sound? Would I be able to tweak the settings in the amp to compensate for it?

It won't make any difference to the sound. Amps normally come with an autotune thing now for distance between speakers etc anyway.

I don't know anything about Onkyo's speakers. At that price they might be great, but at that price I would expect very, very little in terms of sound quality.
If you're on a tight budget, I'd settle for two good speakers in stead of 6 terrible ones. Then you can get some second hand terrible speakers to give you the surround feel and upgrade as you go along.
At £300 you shouldn't expect to find anything that will blow you away.
Then again, go have a listen. It might be they suit you just fine.

I've got tannoy 5.1 speakers, they are far from high end but they are great, and then even better for the money.
More expensive will get you better in most cases but that doesn't mean all the cheaper stuff is bad.

I had onkyo speakers not that set (5.1 set up) , and I was never impressed with them and after a year or so of light use two of them started crackling.
The sub isn't too bad though.

The Bostons are good for their size but rely alot on the sub
They sound great until you hear bookshelf speakers as they have more depth without relying on the sub
