How do those fake brakes work? Do they just slot on in front of the current brakes?

They just sit between the wheel and brake. Was very popular in Germany 8-12 years ago where it was a common way of doing a "rear disc conversion".
Saw a lot of cars with only discs and no calipers. Typically the fake rear discs were quite a bit bigger than the real front ones. Very cool stuff!
