Say you buy something (new) and it comes with a 12 month warranty.

If it becomes faulty during the warranty period, what type of warranty do you have on the replacement part?

- remainder of original warranty period
- 12 months from when you received the replacement part

I'd assume it'd be another 12 months on the defective part e.g. if a garage changes a clutch, they have to give you 12 months warranty on the clutch.

depends on the product and parts being replaced but normally the part will have a 12 month warranty from the date it was installed/replaced

we offer 30 day warranty on any repair or part fitted, not many people/companies i know that will offer a full 12 months on parts.

If you're on about a part that's been replaced within the product, as in a repair, then it varies. If it's a complete replacement product, then you get a new full warranty. Pretty sure that's EU law.

pretty certain its not the law or not mandatory for UK to enforce that, certain they can stipulate your warranty is from your original date of purchase only

I can't be assed to google it, but I'm like 90% sure this is EU law. I'm certain there was a number of cases regarding Apple products being replaced with new items and Apple refusing to supply full warranty. In the end they were overruled by EU courts.

This is strictly for replacement items though, not repairs.

is this in the UK though? I dont think the UK has to adhere to most of the EU directives that are supposedly set, like the mysterious "2 year EU warranty" i hear quoted day in day out

Yeah, the UK is a member of EU.

There's no 2 year warranty by law in EU. Think minimum on new products is 6 months.

also just to add a manufacturer does not have to give any warranty if they dont want, a warranty or guarantee is just an extension to their rights but its not a legal requirement.

If Apple replace your phone 1 day before the warranty runs out, you get that 1 day on the replacement.

British Standards supercede EU directives. EU directives which, 9 times out of 10, are driven by the BS equivalent.

Seems I'm getting my stuff mixed up then.

Oh well, our consumer rights are decidedly better over here then.

Everything is more footloose and fancy free in the EU. Hence they wanted to ban our bagpipes, our haggis and straighten bananas.

The crazy dope smoking bastards.
