Torrentz, IsoHunt and PirateBay, sorted.
Tbf, for music use Soulseek unless you're after lossless material.

What do you mean by safe? It's as safe as any other torrent site You should be using something like Peerblock or Peerguardian either way.

Can't say i've ever found virus/malware in torrents apart from Avast giving fault detections on keygens. But similarly, you should be running an AV anyway.

Torrents are terrible slow and full of crap. Look how to use mirc its easy safer and mega fast. Most bots are sending at over 10mb/s and thats consistent. Only downfall single tracks are hard to come by. Use xdccfinder.com to search

IRC would be the last system i'd want to use for downloading
If you want speed and security then Usenet is your only option.

wow people are still using xdcc, that takes me back!
Torrents arent 100% fantastic but its big, you can secure most aspects of the process I think but it wouldn't be practical. The biggest problem with open public sites is that someone could create something nasty and package it up as The Batman Dark Knight Rises and upload the torrent for people to download who aren't clued up!
As Dom says, should always be using AV and peerblock if you are that paranoid!
I'd also recommend private only/invite sites that only list scene releases (verified on the whole trust system of the scene), this normally ensures you are getting quality stuff from central sources which are up to the job!

I always read the comments before i download anyway as others usually comment if the torrent is a load of BS. And if it's a film then look the release up on www.vcdq.com for video/audio rating and comments.
Edit - Private trackers are ok if you can get the invite and keep up the seeding ratio. But unfortunately seeding opens you up to getting caught.

yeah going through all of that is good practice on public sites! Yet there is still a chance of a fake release to be put up.
When I download linux isos and stuff I normally use a seedbox which seeds for me too without lagging my connection to fuck, the downside to private sites is that they require you to seed content to make sure your ratio (download vs upload) stays at 1:1, there are rules and processes on these sites to block your account if your ratio is shitty.

I use extratorrent as it has screen shots for films plus it's simple site to work around. Pictures on left hand side for the new stuff. For music I use the search bar in the top of vuze programme. Probably the least secure but I've never had any problems like.

Seeding on private sites is probably more secure then connecting to a public swarm from a public site for any amount of time IMO. But you are less likely to get a letter from your ISP/some bullshit company if you take precautions!
